I hadn't bought a new pair of glasses for about 8 years. I guess I had forgotten just how much a pair of prescription glasses costs these days. I'd been wearing contacts for the last few years, but that year my spring allergies had made me look at getting my first new pair of glasses in a long time.
I've worn glasses since I was a kid, and the memories came back as I was staring at this $500 designer frame. I remembered how frustrating it can be to find just the right pair, the one that will look good with everything you own - because you can't afford more than one pair. I remember being shown the "covered" or "managed care" tray that they hide behind the desk - the dozen or so frames that are covered by insurance or Medicare that never look good no matter who is wearing them.
A few years ago, I worked at one of the largest independent optical labs in the country (one of the places that doctors send your prescription to have the glasses made). I knew how much frames, including designer frames, cost. I also knew how much lenses cost. And guess what: it's not anywhere close to the $700 I was being quoted by the saleswoman at the store at the mall. It's much, much, much less.
So, I decided to do something about it. The prices you see on this site reflect how much glasses should cost. We don't have an expensive retail store lease or sales staff to pay. We don't have to hold expensive inventory to get you in the door, and we don't try to upsell you on high-priced designer frames after you see the "managed care" tray.
