“Google Doodle”: John Lennon’s Iconic Specs on the Homepage

One of the 20th century’s most iconic figures, John Lennon, would have celebrated his 70th birthday on October 9th, 2010. In tribute, Google transformed its homepage into a fluttery, peaceful world set to the song “Imagine.”

Lennon’s birthday was remembered worldwide in different ways: A biopic called “Nowhere Boy” debuted last week in the U.S. to coincide with the anniversary of his birthday.  In Strawberry Fields, Central Park, New York City, there was a “”Peace and Love March.” And interviews with people who’d known Lennon were aired, including interviews given by the remaining Beatles members, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, who remembered their old friend to NPR host, Terry Gross.

Google’s tribute was simpler than most: a black and white animated sketch, featuring a sketch of Lennon’s famous visage and glasses, on their homepage set to one of Lennon’s most popular and most poignant songs, “Imagine.” Google’s tribute found beauty in its simplicity, as did Lennon’s message of “the world…as one.”

Love the Google tribute. John would have been delighted. The sketch of John on their homepage is simply imaginative.
