Nearsightedness May Soon Be A Thing Of The Past
Researchers have identified a collection of differences in genes that make people more susceptible to myopia, or nearsightedness. Almost 10% of the world’s population is affected by nearsightedness, and researchers are hopeful that the discovery will lead to earlier detection and ultimately prevention. A treatment may take the form of eye drops or pills and will seek to prevent the distorted growth of the eyeball that causes nearsightedness. Today, the condition must develop before it can be diagnosed, but with the new discovery treatment can begin earlier and may be able to prevent the condition.
