Underground Radar®: Oakley’s Donation to Chilean Miners

The story of the Chilean miners is nothing less than terrifying, the story of their rescue nothing less than remarkable. Trapped for 69 days almost half a mile below the Earth’s surface and after a days-long rescue, the men finally saw daylight thanks to a large drill and donations of time and money from various private businesses and the Chilean government. In the inhospitable Atacama Desert, families and journalists gathered for weeks to support and await their loved ones.

Because the miners were underground for more than 2 months, they required special eye wear to protect their retinas for their first hours in sunlight. Oakley donated a pair of sunglasses from their Radar line to each miner to prevent any serious retinal damage. The Radar glasses, according to Oakley.com, “[filter] out 100% of UVA / UVB / UVC & harmful blue light up to 400nm.”

“Oakley vice president for research and development Carlos Reyes said the company is “honored to have assisted” the rescue effort,” reports The Epoch Times, and the donation helped bring about a happy ending to the miners’ long, painful journey.

Two months in the dark is a long time. Really no telling how much damage they may suffer from sudden sunlight. Laudable indeed is Oakley’s reaching out to help donating the shades.
