The Eco Impact War: Contacts vs. Glasses

What's better for the environment: glasses or contacts?

I recently came across an intriguing article over at The Green Lantern by Nina Shen Rastogi discussing the environmental impact of contact lenses versus glasses.

I’ll admit, I’m not the  most “green” person ever, but I do appreciate the new eco-friendly cleaners (makes me feel safer for myself and my family!), organic food (when I can afford it), and ways to cut back energy and consumer waste for everyone’s overall good. Yet I never once have thought about the fact that there may be an environmental impact in choosing glasses over contacts, or vice versa.

After detailing the waste generated by contacts and glasses, Rastogi concludes that the environmental impact is “minimal.” Her exploration certainly still makes for an interesting read, though.

And if you want even more insight on this eco issue, check out the Green Girls Global blast-from-the-past post (from 2008; okay not that long ago) exploring her own “green” thoughts about eyewear.

This is an interesting topic. My thoughts were that contacts would produce less waste than glasses. Then again compared to other things this is a very minimal issue.
